Out with the old, in with the new.

Joy

There’s something special about back-to-school shopping, especially when you’re a kid. For me, it wasn’t just about getting new clothes–it was about the whole experience. My mom, my sister, and I would head out to the stores together, browsing the racks for the perfect outfits to kick off the school year. It wasn’t just about the clothes themselves but the feeling of fresh starts and new possibilities. I remember the excitement building up as we picked out new jeans, shirts, and shoes. And of course, my mom’s go-to saying, “Out with the old, in with the new,” would ring in my ears, marking the moment we’d leave behind the old school year and step into the next one with a little more confidence and style.

Once we got home, it was all about showing off our finds. We’d lay everything out on the couch–new jeans, fresh sneakers, and all the little accessories that made each outfit feel just right. Then came the fashion show. My sister and I would model our new looks. My mom would watch with a smile, probably just as excited as we were. Those little moments helped take the edge off what could’ve been a stressful transition back into school mode.

Even now, when I think about that time of year, it’s hard not to smile. “Out with the old, in with the new” wasn’t just a catchy phrase; it was a ritual that helped me embrace change and welcome the unknowns of each new school year. It’s funny how a simple proverb can carry so much meaning when you pair it with memories of laughter, love, and the joy of fresh beginnings.
