Laughter is the best medicine.

I still remember the day we went to visit the lot for our new house–it was meant to be a fun trip for us girls. My mom, aunt, sister, and I were all eager to see where our future home would be, and there was a lot of talk about the plans and what the house would look like. But everything changed in an instant when I was stung by a bee. The pain was sharp, and I couldn’t stop crying. I was in the backseat of the car, overwhelmed by the sting, and the mood quickly shifted from excitement to concern. Everyone was trying to calm me down, but nothing seemed to help.

In a rush, we headed straight to my aunt’s apartment, hoping to find some relief. In the midst of the chaos, my aunt, ever the one to keep things light, said with a straight face, “Don’t worry, I’m going to pee on it.” It was such an unexpected response, and despite the pain I was feeling, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was a completely ridiculous thing to say, but somehow, in that moment, it took my mind off the pain. For the first time since the sting, I was focused on something other than the sharp discomfort.

Looking back, my mom’s saying, “Laughter is the best medicine,” truly held weight that day. The pain didn’t magically disappear, but the laughter allowed me to take a step back and breathe for a moment. In a strange way, that humor from my aunt brought a sense of calm, and while the sting was still there, I was able to handle it better. That day became more than just a visit to our new house–it became a reminder of how humor and lightness can help us through even the most uncomfortable moments.
